Like most people I remember where I was when they won. The radio was on at my job and an announcer interrupted the music with the announcement. I was shocked. I had watched the 10-3 game a few weeks earlier and didn’t see anything in that game that left me with hope. Sadly I just read the 2022 article from the Athletic on Pavelich and his suicide by Dan Robson. It’s an article everyone should go back and read. Thanks for a wonderful article Helene!

“Deafening roar.’’

I can hear it in my head!

Did you know Bill skated in the movie, Miracle on Ice? I remember watching it and seeing him!

It's amazing you were there and covered it and so much fun to read your notes and the quotes and how it was a small venue and how it resonated over the world and how that realization came back to you who were there. Wonderful story proud to know you and great job then and now! You gave me new images to remember from a historic event!

I was a Navy Officer candidate in Newport Rhode Island when one of my fellow cadets told me about the game and the fact that we were winning (had won)! What a great memory. Thanks Helene for sharing!

Wow, thanks for sharing your experiences and the game sheets and notes. Incredible to see that. The anecdote about the Russian dignitary was special. I was too young to remember or see the game but I think it is arguably a part of American history that we can all be proud of which should give perspective to its place in our culture. As usual, thanks for the incredible writing.

Great piece, had just completed my second year in the Navy. Watch the game on tape delay with family. Greatest sports moment of the 20th century.

Grew up on Long Island and used to love Newsday.

That game cemented hockey in the US.

As usual Helene… great article.

Al Michaels the “do you believe in miracles” announcer sits in my section (111) at the Kings games and I’ve occasionally chatted with him.

If he’s there Monday night I’ll ask him about the Lake Placid experience.

Lucky you for being there!!

As usual, Helene nails it. I got chills reading her article and recalling that special lifetime sports moment. In those days, Olympics TV was tape delayed so the only way to follow the game live was listening to the radio. At the client’s office, work came to a dead halt and most of us were glued to the radio listening to the game. When the US prevailed, huge cheers erupted in the office. No one bothered to work that day - I seem to recall people leaving to go to bars to celebrate.

Thank you again Helene for being back the memories of that amazing sport moment.

What an amazing piece, Helene. I have tears flowing not unlike 1980; thank you so much. My enduring memorty is of Jim Craig, with Old Glory draped on his shoulders, searching the crowd, likely looking for his family.

i was 27 then .. my first hockey was in kcmo in a stock yard type arena .. if my dad was still alive i'd have a better knowledge, but what i remember was as we entered the arena the crowd was mooing like cows and we walked on / in a wood tunnel ... the sticks were wood a when they'd break the guy in the timer box would give them to us kids .. i still have it .. with my dads help we taped and glued it together .. i think we saw the kc blades or scouts not sure .. so fast forward i am in Hawthorne, California and the fabulous forum is real close, as you know ... one memory is i was tossed out on night as i had seat very close to la bench and they wer playing Minnesota and Marcel Dionne was not playing like i wanted him to play and after a few (to many) beers i was giving both ears full and at that time of history saying the F word wasn't appreciated. now the funny part to this story is i was tossed outside and my ride was in the Forum club drinking with his friend so i walk around the forum and at one door i heard some cheering . so i sort of leaned in to hear the score and the door man said " are you coming inside " well yes i am .. so i of course went to the concession stand got another beer and made my way back down to my seat .. i think i had about two or three sips when i heard behind me a voice that said " joe he's back inside" well next joe and his buddy took me to the drunk room where i went to jail to sleep it off ... had to call my boss who owned bluebird liquor to come get me as i was to open that day...
